What Does Custom AI Software Development Cost?
A credible AI software estimate depends on product scope, data, integrations, quality requirements, security and the planned operating model.

The short answer
There is no credible fixed price for custom AI software without a defined scope. A small validation project is fundamentally different from a production business application with roles, data migration, multiple integrations and demanding security requirements.
The main cost drivers
- Scope of the user interface and business logic
- Number and quality of existing data sources
- Interfaces to existing systems
- Complexity of RAG, agents or workflows
- Testing, evaluation and failure handling
- Roles, permissions and security requirements
- Hosting, monitoring and ongoing operation
Why a discovery phase is useful
A short technical and business scoping phase can make risks visible before a larger budget is committed. It can then define an MVP or first production stage around explicit assumptions.
MVP instead of building everything at once
If core assumptions are still unclear, the most important product or technical hypothesis should be tested first. A good MVP reduces scope without reducing the validity of the test.
Include ongoing operating costs
Beyond development, costs can include model calls, vector search, infrastructure, monitoring, backups and maintenance. These operating costs should be considered during architecture design rather than after launch.
Why we do not invent a price range here
A precise-looking number without information about the data, integrations and quality requirements would be marketing rather than estimation. It is more useful to define the requirements well enough for effort, risk and ongoing cost to become understandable.
What a credible estimate needs
- A clear user and process scope
- Known data sources and interfaces
- Initial quality criteria
- A decision on prototype, MVP or production system
- Known hosting and security requirements
